Professional Development: Summer 2025

Opportunities for Educators Summer 2025

For summer 2025, we are offering two Atlas Workshops opportunities for educators in Europe: one in Greece and the other in Berlin, Germany.

Unpacking Ancient History in Today's Context

Greece: June 30th - July 5th, 2025

People around the world study Greece to learn about ancient history, society, and the roots of Western civilization. But the way this history is laid out in textbooks and museums often paints a narrow picture. Too often we miss the opportunity to foster critical conversations about our understanding of the past, and how it influences our perspective on the present. How is our understanding of history shaped by those who are telling it? How can we bring the relevance of ancient history, and historical places, to life for our students? And how can we, as educators, expand how we talk about history, classics, and their connections to the multifaceted experiences, identities, values, and cultures of our students today?

Collective Memory & Public History

Berlin: July 27 - August 1, 2025

Few major cities in Europe have a more complicated history than Berlin. While the modern German capital is known as a hub of innovation, art, and business, the signs of 20th century war and division still show throughout the city, especially in its architecture and monuments. On this program we will treat Berlin as our home base to explore how cultural memory, public history, design, and storytelling tie together. We will visit the monuments and memorials of WWII and the Holocaust and pass by the open plazas and remaining sections of the Berlin Wall. We will seek out the narratives of communism and consider how current politics are still impacted by the history we are taught to remember. How does Berlin commemorate its past while also looking toward the future? How might we tell our own histories in ways that promote peace and justice in our communities and around the world?
